Interests & Responsibilities
David has two key facets to his role: For three days a week, he supports the BTO Regional Network in order to increase participation in BTO surveys across England and to promote the organisation's wider work. For two days a week, he supports the Breeding Bird Survey National Organiser with coordinating and promoting the UK-wide BTO/JNCC/RSPB organised Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and Waterways Breeding Bird Survey (WBBS). In addition, David helps coordinate the Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey carried out on BBS squares, a scheme run by Partners from Butterfly Conservation, the Centre for Hydrology and Ecology, JNCC and BTO.
Other information
Previous to this role, David worked in the Garden BirdWatch Team as a Supporter Development Officer between June 2019 and March 2021. As part of that role, he worked with the rest of the team to write and send out the regular Garden BirdWatch enewsletter. Prior to that, he has spent the majority of his career to date working for RSPB. This includes 10 and a half years working at RSPB Lakenheath Fen, plus shorter placements at RSPB Radipole Lake RSPB Bempton Cliffs and RSPB Arne.
David is a very keen birder, often appearing on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Wildlife Hour as one the station's wildlife experts, and enjoys long walks in the countryside. He enjoys photographing landscapes and invertebrates and contributing to monitoring schemes. Additionally, he is an active member of his local amateur dramatics society where he has performed in both musicals and pantomimes.
