Identification
Ease of identification
We have classified all commonly occurring species according to their ease of identification. For example:
For species such as Blue Tit, identification is described as 'usually straightforward', meaning it is fairly easy to identify them, perhaps because of their distinctive colouring or markings.
Whereas for species such as Water Pipit, identification is described as 'often difficult'. This may be the case where one species bears a strong resemblance to another species at first glance.
Calls and songs in identification
Using the online wildlife sound archive at xeno-canto, we have hand-picked a set of sound recordings that encapsulate the main vocalisations of each species.
Identification videos
If a species (or species with which it may often be confused) features in a BTO identification video, this will be shown here.
